Rome, Italy: Rustic fare in an old Roman stable
In an ancient stone stable, dinner is served every night at 9 and announced by the tinkling of a bell—one of the many aspects that makes Baba feel less like a restaurant (especially one in bustling Rome) and more like you've lucked into an invite to a warm, wonderful dinner party in the country.
Your hostess is Baba, a grand, gregarious padrona di casa who favors unfussy homecooked dishes (pumpkin risotto, crepes stuffed with smoked scamorza, a mozzarella-like cheese) made with organic ingredients.
We recommend ordering a few too many dishes and settling in to enjoy the hearth and the décor, where Baba's personality also shines: The walls are lined with her collections, including a cluster of intricate baking molds and a series of oil portraits of sober-looking gentlemen of yore.
