Santa Barbara de Heredia, Costa Rica: Wake up, smell coffee
In our experience, people fall into two categories. One group wakes up and needs coffee. The other group wakes up and NEEDS COFFEE.
For those in the latter category especially, we'd point you to Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn, the first certified sustainable hotel in Costa Rica.
In addition to mainlining organic, sustainably grown coffee, there are plenty of other reasons visit. Among them, lush gardens, tropical forests and coffee plantations that you can visit on horseback, hiking in the Braulio Carrillo National Park Cloud Forest, a visit to a nearby volcano rim, whitewater rafting and lots of exotic wildlife along the way. You won't see many quetzals or peccaries back home.
The hotel's restaurant, as you might expect, serves organic foods that they grow as well as those from a local coop, making a persuasive case for contemporary Costa Rican cuisine.
Rates start at $295 in the high season.
