Monteverde, Costa Rica: Where the local is the way to go
Doña Delsa and Rolo are the names of the two, small, totally adorable trains that operate as the recently-opened Monteverde Trainforest Railroad.
Book passage and you'll get a 90-minute, low-impact tour through Costa Rica's high-altitude Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. You should see some combo of birds (there are over 400 species here), butterflies, lizards and monkeys, as well as an amazing variety of plants (over 2500 species, if you're counting). The panoramic view across Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lagoon is a beauty.
It's not a cheap ride: $50 for adults, $32.50 for students, but kids 12 and under ride free. And the company that operates it supports several local conservation projects. Nearby: Sky Trek.
